Location: Buea, Cameroon
Architect: 237 Architectural Design Studio
Project Type: Mixed-Use Development (Commercial + Residential)
Montana Complex emerges as a refined response to the evolving urban fabric of Buea — a city experiencing accelerated growth, shifting lifestyles, and increasing demand for integrated living environments. Conceived as a vertical mixed-use destination, the project brings together commerce, community, and contemporary residential life within a unified architectural expression.
Rather than separating urban functions, the design layers activity vertically, transforming limited urban land into a dynamic and efficient spatial ecosystem. Retail and public engagement activate the street edge, while elevated residential levels provide privacy, comfort, and panoramic connection to the surrounding landscape.
The result is an architecture that operates simultaneously as infrastructure and identity — a new civic presence within the city.

The building’s architectural language is defined by precision, rhythm, and material restraint. A composed palette of contemporary façade panels establishes a calm urban presence, punctuated by vertical glazing elements that emphasize height and movement.
A sculpted corner articulation anchors the massing, introducing softness and human scale through stacked balconies and transparent glass balustrades. Vertical fins and recessed planes create depth, allowing light and shadow to animate the façade throughout the day while contributing to passive environmental performance.
Key architectural strategies include:
Layered façade systems enhancing thermal control
Vertical circulation expressed as a luminous architectural spine
Deep balcony projections providing shading and outdoor living space
Clean geometric framing reinforcing visual order and identity
The composition balances solidity and transparency, achieving a refined urban elegance.

At ground level, commercial spaces establish an active public interface, encouraging pedestrian engagement and contributing to the economic vitality of the neighborhood. Shops and communal functions create a porous urban edge, reinforcing the building’s role as a social anchor.
Above, residential units are organized to maximize daylight access, natural ventilation, and spatial efficiency. Private balconies extend living spaces outward, fostering a strong indoor-outdoor relationship suited to Buea’s tropical climate.
Circulation zones are intentionally daylit, transforming movement through the building into a spatial experience rather than a purely functional necessity.

Designed for tropical performance, Montana Complex integrates passive environmental strategies that reduce operational demand while enhancing occupant comfort:
Shaded façade articulation minimizing solar gain
Cross-ventilation opportunities across residential units
Durable, low-maintenance materials suited to humid climates
Rooftop terraces introducing greenery and thermal buffering
These strategies ensure long-term resilience while maintaining architectural refinement.

Montana Complex represents a progressive model for mid-rise development in emerging African cities — demonstrating how mixed-use architecture can simultaneously address density, economic activation, and quality of life.
The project reflects 237 Architectural Design Studio’s broader ambition: to elevate everyday urban buildings into meaningful architectural contributions that shape identity, encourage community, and anticipate future urban growth.
Here, architecture becomes more than shelter or commerce — it becomes a framework for contemporary city living.
