Urban Residence explores a contemporary vision of collective living where architecture balances privacy, community, and environmental responsiveness within a compact urban setting. Conceived as a modern residential landmark, the project responds to the evolving expectations of urban dwellers seeking comfort, identity, and spatial quality within growing African cities.
Rather than treating multi-family housing as repetitive infrastructure, the design elevates residential living into an architectural experience — defined by light, proportion, and carefully articulated façade depth.
The building presents a calm yet confident civic presence, integrating refined materiality with a rhythmic composition of balconies, framed volumes, and vertical transparency.
ᴀʀᴄʜɪᴛᴇᴄᴛᴜʀᴀʟ ʟᴀɴɢᴜᴀɢᴇ & ꜱᴘᴀᴛɪᴀʟ ɪᴅᴇɴᴛɪᴛʏ
The architectural composition is driven by layered geometry and controlled contrasts. Projecting balcony volumes create depth and shadow, softening the building mass while enhancing individual apartment identity. Vertical timber-inspired screening elements introduce warmth and tactility, balancing the precision of the contemporary envelope.
A glazed vertical circulation core anchors the composition, allowing natural light to penetrate shared spaces while visually expressing movement through the building. This transparency reinforces orientation and strengthens the connection between residents and the urban environment.
Material selections emphasize durability and elegance:
Smooth composite façade panels for longevity and minimal maintenance
Textured stone accents grounding the base composition
Glass balustrades enhancing openness and visual continuity
Vertical screening systems providing passive shading and privacy
Together, these elements create a façade that evolves throughout the day as light interacts with layered surfaces and recessed planes.

Each residence is designed to maximize natural ventilation, daylight access, and outdoor extension through generous private balconies. The spatial organization prioritizes comfort and adaptability, supporting contemporary lifestyles while maintaining efficient planning.
Ground-level integration ensures secure access and structured parking, preserving pedestrian clarity and residential privacy. Landscaping elements soften the urban edge, creating a transition between public street life and private domestic space.
The project emphasizes the psychological dimension of housing — recognizing that well-designed residential environments contribute directly to wellbeing, social connection, and long-term urban value.
ꜱᴜꜱᴛᴀɪɴᴀʙɪʟɪᴛʏ & ᴜʀʙᴀɴ ʀᴇꜱᴘᴏɴꜱɪʙɪʟɪᴛʏ
Designed for a tropical climate, the building integrates passive environmental strategies to reduce energy demand while improving occupant comfort:
Deep balcony overhangs for solar control
Cross-ventilation opportunities across units
Shading screens minimizing heat gain
Durable materials suited for humid environments
The result is an architecture that performs quietly and efficiently while maintaining a refined aesthetic presence.

Urban Residence reflects a broader ambition: redefining mid-rise residential architecture in emerging cities through design excellence and environmental intelligence.
It demonstrates that contemporary housing in Africa can be both economically practical and architecturally distinguished — contributing positively to the skyline while enhancing everyday living experiences.
At 237 Architectural Design Studio, we view residential architecture not simply as shelter, but as an investment in urban dignity, identity, and future growth.
